No LOVE For POPTONES
June 13, 2003Despite previous reports to the contrary, former HOLE frontwoman Courtney Love has not signed a U.K. record deal with Poptones/Telstar. According to an article published in Saturday's (June 14) The Times, the label's plans to ink a deal with Love were abandoned for undisclosed reasons.
As previously reported, Love is believed to be in advanced negotiations to sign a solo deal with Virgin Records. Her solo debut, "America's Sweetheart", is expected to surface in late fall. A number of tracks on the CD were reportedly co-written with 4 NON BLONDES' Linda Perry, who has penned hits for PINK and CHRISTINA AGUILERA. In addition, Love is said to have recorded a cover of Kim Carnes' 1981 #1 hit "Bette Davis Eyes" for possible inclusion on the album.
HOLE's 1998 swan song, "Celebrity Skin", debuted at No. 9 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 1.35 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. The title cut hit No. 1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks airplay chart, while the track "Malibu" reached No. 3 on the same tally.
In April, Love placed ads in New York's Village Voice and L.A. Weekly in Los Angeles in an attempt to recruit new members for her live band. The artist was scheduled to play the U.K.'s Reading and Leeds festivals in August but has canceled those plans in favor of work on the new album.
